Spike Lee, a controversial figure known for the pugnacity that has followed his career as a director, is the star of this documentary. It provides a forum for his well-known ego, with rambling, long-winded, and downright boring introductions to a handful of insignificant deleted scenes. Surprisingly, Lee's contribution to the commentary track is the least interesting, often consisting of simple exclamations like "I love this scene" or "Ooh, watch this!" In contrast, the reflections by cinematographer Ernest Dickerson, editor Barry Alexander, and costume designer Ruth Carter delve deeper into the fine points of the production's logistics.
Overall, this Malcolm X special edition is a sensible upgrade, providing a valuable perspective on the making of the film, beyond just catering to Spike Lee's fan club. The archival footage and the behind-the-scenes documentary offer a compelling look at the production's challenges and the attention to detail that went into bringing this iconic story to the screen.
